i did one of those tumblr slideshow things to explain why I hate swords

I think unless you’re designing a fighting game or an RPG character the cultural and symbolic significance of something is just as important as whether it’s super badass and has functions and can cut through whatever.

Like while it would be fun if Jen were running around with a mace or whatever if I were re-designing her today I would still make her swordgirl just because kinda the point of Jen is she’s in dialogue with Narnia and the Arthurian myth and other things involving swords.

Bells and whistles, even when they serve cool action scenes, can be an impediment to character design if you don’t think damn hard about it. I generally err in favor of paring down to something elemental or archetypal.

I understand that swords are kinda cool and that stuff but compared to warhammers and spears? Swords are vastly impractical. There’s a reason why Knights used lances not swords in mounted combat, because anyone other than a barely trained peasant had armor that would deflect that sucker! I mean, the point is fairly deadly and you aim for the weak spots but practically a sword is one of the worst weapons to use against an armored warrior. Also, swords are totally overused, as the OP said.
